The goal of the new Columbia Police Department, historically an automobile dealership off the square in downtown Columbia, was to co-locate the city’s various police functions from three different locations to one central facility to increase the efficiency of the police department.  Limited funding encouraged the team to propose repurposing of existing spaces to accommodate the police functions instead of extensive renovation when possible.

For example, the existing lobby was redesigned internally and with updated finishes to create a controlled access for the public to interact with the records department. Patrol, CID, Interview, Central Administration, Narcotics, Records, Evidence, and Training functions were accommodated in the existing two story structure. The interior design focused on use of color and pattern to stretch the limited budget, which were enhanced by departmental designed graphics and historical photographs of the department.
